Peel CAS is currently recruiting drivers for the Brampton and the Mississauga area. Mileage is paid and you become a part of a great team! Volunteer drivers take children to and from therapy appointments, parental visits and other outings and events. The volunteer driver also ensures that the child reaches their scheduled appointment on time and is left in the care of a responsible adult at the appointment location. In addition, volunteer drivers deliver Holiday Wishes gifts, and assist the Peel Children’s Aid Foundation during special events.
Linda Simon is not your typical volunteer. As a volunteer driver with Peel CAS for the past 35 years she has spent countless hours with children and youth making sure they always get where they need to be.
“The only time I didn’t drive was when I took a week off when I got married and then a bit of time after I had my son,” shares Linda.
Totally dedicated to her task, she keeps nursery rhyme CDs in her car to entertain the younger children. “Sometimes you drive the same children and get the chance to know them. I’ve heard some pretty imaginative stories and sometimes they just need someone to talk to. It feels good knowing they have trust in you.”
What message does Linda have for those interested in becoming a volunteer driver? “You have to love kids and of course enjoy driving. It’s a great opportunity to volunteer and really make a difference.”
Did you know? In 2015, 75 volunteer drivers spent more than 29,000 hours driving over a million kilometres taking children and youth to various appointments.
