The new Child, Youth and Family Services Act (CYFSA) has replaced the existing Child and Family Services Act.
The changes to the CYFSA are positive and will help Peel CAS continue to deliver services that put children and youth at the centre of decision-making.
Key areas of changes to the CYFSA include:
- Increase the age of protection so that CAS's across Ontario can deliver services to 16 and 17 year olds - effective January 1, 2018
- Strengthening the focus on early intervention, helping prevent children and families from reaching crisis situations at home
- Making services more culturally appropriate for all children and youth in the child welfare system, including First Nations, Inuit and Métis and Black children and youth, to help ensure they receive the best possible support
- Improving oversight of service providers, including children's aid societies, so that children and youth receive consistent, high-quality services across Ontario.
Part X – about disclosure and confidentiality - won't come into effect until January 2020.
