Foster parent training and supports
Training Opportunities Peel Children’s Aid recognizes the benefit of providing foster parents with ongoing quality training. In order to enhance knowledge and develop child-related skills, courses and workshops are offered on a regular basis. Foster parents are required to attend a least two training courses per year. They are free to all approved foster parents. New directions in foster parent training are leading to opportunities to take post secondary accredited courses at community college. These courses not only contribute to a foster parent’s personal growth but ultimately benefit the child in their care. Professional Support Just as every child in care has an assigned social worker; foster families have a resource social worker assigned to their family. Resource workers assist with administrative concerns, identifying training needs, answer questions about Ministry policy, and supporting you and your family. Each foster family also has access to a 24-hour emergency telephone line. Financial Assistance Foster parents are not employees and do not receive a salary. Foster parents receive a rate of approximately $30 (Regular Foster Care) for each day a child or youth who resides in their home. These payments cover the cost of food, shelter and other general expenses associated with caring for a child. An additional monthly allowance provides for clothing, recreation, school and spending money, depending on the age of the child. Children in foster care receive health and dental coverage. The money received by caregivers is non-taxable. Family Activities and Recognition Throughout the year, foster families have many opportunities to socialize. Our agency provides activities such as family swimming and pizza parties, summer picnics, autumn apple picking and breakfast with Santa. All of these events are intended to help strengthen the family unit even when foster children are absent from the home. Foster parents are formally recognized twice annually for their dedication and commitment to children and the work of the Peel Children’s Aid Society. The vital role that children of foster parents play in the dynamics of a foster family is also recognized and appreciated yearly through two Homes For Kids $1000 scholarships. Foster Parent Association The Foster Parent Association (FPA) is made up of all foster families within Peel region. Members are encouraged to attend annual general meetings as well as open forums which provide them opportunities to bring their issues and concerns to the agency.
