International Day for Elimination of Racial Discrimination

Add to:

International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is observed annually on March 21

The theme for the 2025 International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is the 60th anniversary of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD). This milestone offers an opportunity to reflect on the progress made in combating racial discrimination while also acknowledging ongoing challenges.

March 21 is observed annually to commemorate the 1960 Sharpeville massacre in South Africa, where 69 people were killed during a peaceful protest against apartheid laws. This day serves as a reminder of the continued struggle against racial discrimination worldwide.

Despite progress, Indigenous peoples and racialized and religious minority communities, including Muslims, African, Asian, Latin American, and Middle Eastern peoples, continue to face discrimination. This day calls on all individuals, organizations, and governments to actively work to eliminate racism and promote equality.

Around the world, the day is marked by events, discussions, and campaigns aimed at raising awareness and promoting racial equality. You can participate in virtual events hosted by the UN and local organizations, such as webinars, workshops, and social media campaigns to amplify the message of anti-racism.
