Diwali, also known as, Deepawali and Bandi Chor Divas, is one of India's biggest festivals. Deepawali means rows of lighted lamps.
During this time, homes are decorated with candles and Diya wherein families extend their gratitude to Lakshmi, Ganesha and the return of Rama and Ayodhya. The festival tells the story of Rama returning home after a glorious victory saving his wife from Ravana. The joy is felt through the burning of effigies of Ravana, rangoli displays at entrance ways and fireworks displays. The spirit of the Goddess Lakshmi visits each home to bring prosperity and wealth. Homes are cleaned and prepared to ensure her arrival.
Families and communities gather to share various culinary treats like barfi, ladoos, samosa, aloo tikki and many other items especially prepared for the occasion.
Happy Diwali!
