Mentor

Volunteer Position Description

Description & Expectations:

  • Provide support, understanding and guidance in a one-to-one relationship with a child through regular outings/activities
  • Help improve a child’s self-esteem, self-confidence and initiative
  • Help improve and enhance a child’s ability to establish positive relationships with peers and adults
  • Act as a role model displaying consistency, problem-solving skills, use of community resources, socially acceptable behavior, responsibility, etc.

Supervised By:

 Social Worker

 

Qualifications Required:

  • An interest in child welfare and experience with children
  • Reliability, consistency, maturity and flexibility
  • Strong communication skills
  • An understanding of anti-oppression practices and willingness to embrace these practices

Time Required:

  • 3 to 4 hours weekly or bi-weekly
  • Minimum one year commitment

Training Provided:

  • Basic orientation – mandatory
  • Annual workshop
  • Support/training meetings
