Did you know Peel CAS’s Child Welfare Immigration Centre of Excellence (CWICE) is now supporting other provinces? CWICE’s National Outreach project is now underway in three provinces and growing, helping to shape more equitable services for refugee families across the country.
Over the past few months, our Child Welfare Immigration Centre of Excellence has led trainings in Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Manitoba. Plans are in the works to bring three more provinces on board in the coming months. Our team offers instruction on navigating Canada's immigration system, supporting children, youth and families with unresolved immigration status, and connects child welfare professionals with local settlement agencies to learn about the resources available. After the training, provinces have access to consultation services with CWICE for complex cases.
This work is made possible by the generous support of The Northpine Foundation, who made a transformative gift of $900,000 to the Peel Children’s Aid Foundation last year. The grant was to strengthen the child welfare sector’s capacity to serve Government-Assisted Refugee (GAR) children and families and ensuring culturally responsive and coordinated services across the country.

CWICE has reached the halfway mark in this exciting project, with three of six provinces having completed the training and in the consultation phase. Our National Outreach project team has been posting updates about their experiences in other provinces and the importance of this work to build better outcomes for children, youth, and families across Canada.
